Muslim countries have spent over US$1 trillion on Halal food, most of which was imported from abroad

Nearly all muslim-majority countries currently import much of the food they consume, as in the case of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, above 70 per cent. GCC countries are net importers of food, and the vast majority of it is halal certified.

The Financial Times was keen to highlight that of the US$1.2 trillion spent in the world on Halal food, over US$1 trillion were spent in GCC countries. It was also reported that the GCC countries have become highly reliant upon halal food imports from UK, Europe, USA and Australia.
